Gear external pumps consist of a fixed housing consisting of two or more gears of the same size engaged. Usually, one gear is connected to the drive shaft, and the other works as a tension gear. The interaction of the gearing gears and the small tolerance of the housing create a vacuum and pressure that transfer the liquid through the pump. The gear pump is usually bi-directional and does not create ripple.

High pressure gear pumps create high discharge pressure and metered flow due to positive displacement when the discharge line is limited or completely closed. An external safety valve is required to prevent engine overload and line breakage.
